Radiant with life and lighted by love's enchantment. The towers of Oxford shine through the mist, blessing an ancient city, as the magic of Midsummer Eve brings two lovers under its moonlit spell. In this coming-of-age tale, the excitement, squalor and beauty of the English Renaissance unfolds through the lives of two girls growing up, Oxford. Towers in the Mist is a pleasant respite from gritty realism, a step back into a gentler age. There are sorrows in the story, moments of violence and glimpses of squalor but they are only lightly touched upon.

Indeed it is an anybody book. Set in Oxford during the early years of Queen Elizabeth the First, in Sixteenth century England, during a peaceful interlude in the conflict between Catholic and Protestant that tore "Merrie" England apart, Towers in the Mist is a double love story in the days when thirteen was a marriageable age!/5(33).

This is three books in one (A City of Bells, Towers in the Mist, The Dean's Watch), each book about a cathedral town in England, set in either Edwardian or Elizabethan times. As historical fiction, it is filled with satisfying details on the daily life of the diffrent characters/5.
Towers in the Mist is a lovely book, but it does have a few flaws and could be too sentimental for many modern day readers. Although the descriptions of Oxford are beautiful and Goudge’s own love for the place shines through, sometimes she goes into long digressions on the history of the city and university which add very little to the plot.

This is a new departure for Elizabeth Goudge — Oxford of the 16th century as the setting for students torn between a passion for the classics, a taste for poetry, an imaginative conception of a rather unreal world, the yearning for adventure and exploration which reports from the New World have inspired and an adolescent capacity for revelling and mischief, making and playing at love.
